About VAA

Communities Caring for Their Own

Volunteer Action for Aging (VAA), a community service of SCAN, is a volunteer network created to connect seniors to caring people from their own communities.

People Helping People

Our dedicated volunteer coordinators recruit, vet and train people interested in making a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults. Volunteers regularly call seniors, conduct friendly home visits and participate alongside them in activities—because increased social contact results in a better quality of life.

Resources and Reassurance

As a volunteer, you'll be providing reassurance, conversation and company through a variety of activities and events. If you are someone who is looking to connect, VAA offers a wide range of no-cost opportunities in local communities.

Examples of VAA activities include:

  • Friendly visits and calls
  • One-on-one and group technology assistance workshops
  • Style days with no-cost haircuts and manicures
  • Hygiene kit assembly and distribution
  • Thanksgiving meal delivery
  • Guided Autobiography classes and story sharing
  • Ice cream socials
  • Writing letters and cards for deployed military and veterans
  • GiveBack Club of volunteers age 50+
  • Arts and Crafts workshops
  • Music for the Soul performances and sing-alongs
